Elmer L. Andersen, statesman, civic leader, and activist, died November 15, 2004. A former Minnesota governor, Andersen was also an advocate for and champion of the University of Minnesota and its libraries.
Andersen was also an avid and passionate book collector. The Elmer L. Andersen Library, which opened in 2000 on the University's West Bank campus, is a physical demonstration of Governor Andersen's commitment to books, knowledge and learning. The mission of the place mirrors the vision of the man: to celebrate the power of knowledge, learning and wisdom and to preserve and share the rich collections with Minnesota and the world, so that all may be enlightened.
The University of Minnesota Libraries had the great fortune this year to celebrate with Governor Andersen on the occasion of his 95th birthday (see image, above). With his passing, the University Libraries and its staff recognize the many contributions of an outstanding citizen, a passionate leader, and a true friend.
