A Living Legacy

Photo of Elmer L. Andersen

"What nobler purpose can there be for a University than to gather up the prizes of a culture --preserve them, propagate them, make them available--so that the best of what has gone before can be preserved and built on?" -- Elmer L. Andersen

On May 14, 1999, the University of Minnesota Board of Regents unanimously voted to name the newest library facility in honor of former Governor Elmer L. Andersen. It was indeed a fitting tribute to a man who has been the most stalwart of friends to both the University and its Libraries for many years.

The Elmer L. Andersen Library is located on the West Bank of the Twin Cities Campus of the University of Minnesota. This state-of-the-art facility houses eight University special collections and archives units (listed here), the central office of the MINITEX Library Information Network, and the Minnesota Library Access Center (MLAC).

Remembering a friend

Elmer L. Andersen, statesman, civic leader, and activist, died November 15, 2004. A former Minnesota governor, Andersen was also an advocate for and champion of the University of Minnesota and its libraries.

In the summer of 2004 the University of Minnesota Libraries had the great fortune to celebrate with Governor Andersen on the occasion of his 95th birthday. With his passing, the University Libraries and its staff recognize the many contributions of an outstanding citizen, a passionate leader, and a true friend.
